The Idea

The designers of the Off yer bike carrying handle have been using Brompton bikes for many years as part of their daily commute into London from their base in Kent. Whilst loving the flexibility of the Brompton, they were frustrated by the awkwardness of carrying and manoeuvring the bike when not riding it.

After talking to many other Brompton riders about this issue it became clear that there was a real need for a simple high quality retro fit handle to help riders transport and manoeuvre their bikes when off their bikes.

After developing and using several different designs on their own bikes, the designers finally came up with the Off yer bike handle, a simple, high quality retro fit handle, which when fitted stays on the bike and enables riders to easily carry and manoeuvre their bikes onto trains, buses and cars when 'folded' and help carry the bike up and down steps and escalators and over obstacles when in 'ride ready mode'.

The Handle

The Off yer bike handle is constructed in three distinct sections: One large pad, one small pad and a strong, robust thermo moulded rubber handle.

The large front pad, the stablising pad, secures the handle to the main frame cross bar. The smaller rear pad also fits onto the main cross bar behind the narrower diagonal tube and guarantees the handle is positioned in the ideal place for perfect balance when carrying the bike when both folded and in 'ride ready mode'.

Two velcro straps, one on the large front pad and one on the smaller pad lock the pads into place and prevent movement along the frame and a high quality leather backing on the pads eliminates any lateral movement around the main frame tube.

The thermo moulded rubber handle which joins the two pads together has been designed to a specific length and height so that users can carry the bike from either side when folded or in 'ride ready mode'.

Users can decide which side they prefer to carry the bike and adjust the fitting position of the handle accordingly.

The Fit

To fit the Off yer bike handle you will require

1. Your Brompton bike

2. Approx 10 minutes

3. Space to kneel next to your bike when the bike is in standing position.

Step 1.

Unfold your bike to the standing position. The handle bars should be extended with the front wheel in place and the seat extended. The back wheel must remain folded.

Step 2.

Undo the Velcro straps on the handle so they are fully extended. Place the handle on top of the main cross bar with the smaller of the two pads closest to the seat post.

Step 3.

Wrap the larger pad around the main cross bar and secure with the Velcro strips on the pad itself. Repeat with the smaller pad making sure that it is on the seat post side of the short diagonal bar below the main frame as in the picture opposite.

Now the handle is in position you can start to tighten the 'grip' of the pads on the cross bar. The first stage of this is to pull the pads as tight as possible around the cross bar and secure again with the Velcro on the pad. Once you are happy that both pads are as tight as possible you can then move on to the final fit stage.

Step 4

The final fit stage is to use the Velcro straps to secure the handle in place. Guide the straps underneath the cross bar and through the toggle on the other side. Pull tight and return the strap under the cross bar and attach to the velcro strip on top of the pad, as shown in the pictures opposite.

Adjustments can be made at any time to the positioning of the handle by loosening the Velcro straps and pads and following steps 3 and 4 again.

Adjusting the lower stop disc

When your Brompton is initially set up the lower stop disc is usually fully extended on the stem. Once you have fitted your Off yer bike handle you may wish to adjust the lower stop disc when lowered.

This can be done easily using either a 16mm spanner or an adjustable spanner if you prefer.

Step 1.

Using the spanner, release the nut behind the lower stop disc until you can turn it easily by hand.

Step 2.

Turn the nut by hand until it is approx. 5 mm from the back of the lower stop disc.

Step 3.

Now tighten the lower stop disc towards the nut by hand until they touch.

Finally whilst holding the lower stop disc, tighten the nut against the disc using the spanner until tight.

You will now be able to lower the seat post fully.

Small adjustments can be made following the instructions above and increasing the distance you turn the nut if required.
